translator
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I purchased this for a trip to Prague and when I got there found it did not work. Came with no directions and could not get it off Russian so was of no use.

not worse of money
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The keyboard is not sensitive enough and it takes ages to re-type letters pressing twice or even three times on some keys. I was expecting to have a more reliable device for this money.

very poor translator in Chinese
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I'm a Tranditional Chinese speaker(from Taiwan) and can speak both english and spanish but not good enough that's why I bought this Chinese-English-Spanish translator.
the first 2 or 3 hours after I got this one, I can't believe this poor one why it can call "dictionary", there are many wrong words, strange words, unuseful words and simplified words (use in China) in Chinese.

and this "dictionary" say it has "approx. 650,000 words", but compare to my paper spanish-chinese dictionary ( 54, 000 words), my paper dictionary is very very very very better than the poor one.

and yes, sometimes the poor one is useful when I'm traveling, because I just need to take one dictionary with me, but for a serious language learner, its really poor, when I was traveling in New Zealand (5 month) I took this one first then I bought another paper english-chinese dictionary in there.

by the way, I bought this one about 1 year ago, I dont know if there has new version, but I dont except it....and why I didnt return this one, thats because I bought this when I was in latin america, it cost me extra 50 us dollar in post fee and I need to pay money to send it back , it didnt worth to do that......

Franklin translator
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I didn't have the chance to test the product out. The model I was sent was defective. It kept turning itself off before I could firgure out how to make it do what I wanted it to do. It was kind of a pain to have to contact the manufacturer to request authorization for it's return. By the time they got back to me, I had left the country. There is a maximum time period they allow you to return it, even if it arrived defective. I just barely made it, had to rush out to mail it the day I returned, jet lag and all. Still waiting to hear if they received it and to see the credit on my credit card.

Not great
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I am disappointed by this product. Half the time the contacts that I know are in the unit do not show up. Sometimes they do. I do not trust it and am back to the old card rollodex.

Partner ER300T
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This translator does not seem to have many commonly used words. Also it can pronounce only those words that were preinstalled, unlike previous etaco models that could pronounce anything you typed. To add to that, pronounciation itself is awful

Sharp Organizer
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Instead of improving the Sharp Organizer with new technology, this product cannot hold a candle to its predecessors. Earlier generations had greater capacity, durability, ease of use, and reliability. The programming for this product is inflexible, the data capacity is ridiculously low, it is physically flimsy and actually I went straight to the wastebasket with it. A total waste of money.

Bad purchase....beware!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I had read the reviews before purchasing this item - saw the warnings and thought they wouldn't apply to me. Sometimes it pays to listen to the little warning voice in your head. I tired very hard to learn to use this scanner and never got a complete sentence out of it correct. The product simply does not do what it claims to do. You will find yourself taking more time to get a decent scan than to type what you want on your keyboard. So be warned: This is not a time saving device to typing on your keyboard! One additional thing. Read the return policy. The company Amazon uses DOES NOT allow returns. Shortly after clicking "yes" to purchase this item - the request was sent. I had second thoughts about purchasing and tried to cancel the order before the product was even sent, but could not reverse the purchase. A painful and costly lesson.

To Russia with Partner
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After being really impressed with another Ectaco product that I had gotten as a present (see my review of the XL-1500) I convinced my company to buy this for our team because we are doing a lot of business in Russia these days. I had to demonstrate it for the bosses and everyone was really impressed with how straightforward it was to use and how fast and responsive too. It seems really accurate for the type of business we conduct. . It would be nice if the screen was in color but I am now trying to convince the company to upgrade it. I am also using the device to train the new sales reps and translate contracts. It's working like a dream and I am confident that it will help our business enormously.

The best scanner pen on the market!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The IRIS Pen 6 Executive is the best scanner pen on the market. It is 90% acurate and is easy to use. You just install the drivers and software and your almost ready to scan. Calibrating the device is fairly easy. All you do is put the pen on white paper and push down. (It calibrates best when you put the scanner on white computer paper.) Scanning is very easy. Start at space before the text and push down so you see a green light and a green line. (Once text passes this green line, it has been scanned. The text should also be directly under the gray arrow on the top of the scanner pen. If it is not, it will not be scanned properly.) It says you can scan handwriting, but when I tried, it didn't work. (Maybe it's because of my terrible handwriting.) Honestly, If you don't need to scan barcodes or grayscale images, using the scanner pen, you would be fine with the Express version of the IRIS Pen 6. Here is something I scanned for the 'Learn how to use your IRISPen' booklet: "The IRISPen is a unique hand-held OCR device..." I highly recommend this device.

The French Section is Really Good
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
My review makes reference to the French language section ( I have not used the other ones)

I have a 7 year old, who enjoys this software a lot. I love that the sound quality is very good, and the pronuncioation is perfect. There is plenty of vocabulary to practice. I think this is a really good complement to any language program.

I believe that both, beginners and more advanced students 6-10 would enjoy and benefit from it.

Featured vocabulary: numbers, colors, animals, days, months, weather, means of transportations, clothing, and more.

Easy to use.

NOT WORTH IT AT ALL
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased this product for my trip to Italy. It was a complete waist of money. it does not easy translate for you. I thought I would be able to type in a sentence and the device would translate it for me. This was not the case at all. You have to type in a "key word / phrase" so to speak, then scroll down a list of pointless mini phrases only to be disappointed not to find what you were looking for. The few times that we actually remained patient enough to use the product, it took an insanely long time to get a phrase: we had to search word by word. Including express shipping, I paid about $85 for this product.... It's not worth half that. Do yourself a favor and splurge on one of the more elaborate and known to be successful versions of this product. I found ones with great reviews for about $150.
Best of luck!

NOT WORTH IT AT ALL
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased this product for my trip to Italy. It was a complete waist of money. it does not easy translate for you. I thought I would be able to type in a sentence and the device would translate it for me. This was not the case at all. You have to type in a “key word / phrase” so to speak, then scroll down a list of pointless mini phrases only to be disappointed not to find what you were looking for.
Does the job
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Bought a pair for my parents a few months ago. All they wanted was a basic organizer with contacts, calendar/appts, calculator. Games and Spanish translator were icing on the cake, so I've not heard anything about them good or bad. The organizers meet their needs, and they're happy with them.

how do you say "garbage" en espanol
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
way overpriced. screen was hard to see. speaker was hard to hear. most of the functions are worthless. who really wants this thing as their old school early 90's pda? they should have stuck to working on it's translation capabilities. This thing translates word for word when you enter a phrase and you know that's usually going to give you a terrible translation. Then I sent this thing back with 6 hours of owning it and they charged me like 60$ in restocking and postal fees. They even tried to say i damaged the cover in the six hours. get rosetta stone and learn the language then take a <50$ electronic dictionary on your trip.

Good product
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I like this dictionary. I don't have to sit at the computer every time when I'm reading. Sure, you can get better one, but it will cost you much more. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on the dictionary, and I absolutely got what I expected for that price. Thank you.

Disappointing
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I purchased this scanning pen primarily to use with my MacBook Pro. This is the only handheld scanner that is advertised to work with a Mac (the older C-Pen C-10 USB scanner works with the PowerPC Macs but not the new Intel Macs). I even e-mailed Iris and asked them if this product "ran natively on the Intel Mac". I was told that it would have "no problems" running on an Intel Mac....
First, it is not native to the Intel Mac (ie. it is not a Universal program). Second, the software is very buggy when used with the Intel Mac. It shut down on multiple occasions and the trigger only functions sporadically. IT IS NOT FUNCTIONAL ON AN INTEL MAC.
The scanner does not feel very well built (too light and the plastic seems a bit cheap). IrisPen also charges $100 for any software upgrades, which most companies (C-Pen) provide for free.
The only thing that keeps me from giving this a 1 star rating, is the fact that the scan quality is fairly good on a PC.
Basically, handheld scanners are great for students and professionals who do writing (physicians, lawyers, etc). If you are looking for a great USB handheld scanner (for PC use), then try to find a C-10 (no longer made) by C-Pen. The C-20 (the upgrade to the C-10) is good but not great (better than the IrisPen Executive though).

Awesome For Kids
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
KidSpeak 6-in-1 is an awesome product for kids to have fun with and learn several languages(Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Hebrew). The animation is very fun and my kids really love this. I love the fact that my child will talk to me in a different language and I'm sure other parents would agree. When it comes down to it, Transparent Language did an awesome job with this software and I couldn't be more satisfied with it.

this product is not good for someone learning Russian
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I thought that there were few electronic dictionaries on the market for an american learning russian, but figured this product would suffice. Unfortunetly, almost all of the word I didn't know and needed to look up were not in the dictionary, it makes beeping noises that you can't turn off, it offers no russian verb conjugation (or recognition of conjugated verbs), and only talks in english. i would advice students learning russian to buy something else.

A failure of a product
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
It is scandalous that this proudct advertises it works with the Mac -- it's a handheld disaster. With 10.4.7, it will freeze your Mac and require rebooting. I seriously doubt they have spent any time trying to update the drivers for any changes to the operating system in years. Save your time and money, and pass on this.

Good Product for the small amount of money
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I just bought this today and I like the easy to use features once you set everything up its easy to use. But it doesnt have a lot of games on it and it doesnt have a calendar which I would prefer for my personal use. I also think that the word translator doesnt work very well. Overall for the cheap price this is a good product.

A Good Place to Start
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
A software program is a good place to start learning a new language if you intend to self-teach. This program starts out with basic words and then moves on to thematic categories, such as "Colors," "Food," "Body," etc. New words are presented in a very basic manner; you see a picture of the item or action and the word written out, and a person reads the word off to you. You can also record your own voice reading the word to see if the pronunciation matches that of the native speakers. To help you while you're away from your computer, you can add the vocabulary words and phrases to your iPod.

This software is a good place to start and would be good for children, but you're not going to learn Italian with this software alone. The first problem I noticed is common among materials for learning a new language--there is no discussion of phonics. All of my Italian texts have pronunciation guides, but this software package--which offers sound while books cannot--does not. Instead of beginning with basic words, the software should start where we all start learning our native languages--with the alphabet and phonetics. Hearing the sounds would be more useful than trying to sound them out from textbooks. The next problem with this software is vocabulary. I like this software series because it is much cheaper than other software packages, such as Rosetta Stone. You can purchase other products in the series as you go along (EuroTalk Interactive - World Talk! Italian or EuroTalk Interactive - Vocabulary Builder! Learn Italian), and it's not as great a financial burden as buying a complete learning set at one time. However, you're not learning enough vocabulary with these programs alone, and they should be supplemented with other products, such as Mastering Italian Vocabulary: A Thematic Approach (Mastering Vocabulary Series). Finally, while I really enjoy have the iPod clips to listen to while I'm away from my computer, it would be better if the spoken words were presented in both English and Italian. That way, I wouldn't have to look at my iPod to see what the English word is, and I could listen to the tracks while driving.

Overall, I recommend software or CDs to help with Italian pronunciation and this software will certainly help there. Once you are familiar with general pronunciation, you shouldn't have a problem figuring out how to pronounce other Italian words. The software is much more interactive than simply reading from a textbook and it allows you to quiz yourself on word retention. It's not the best way to learn Italian, but the simple fact of the matter is that I turned to this program more often than my textbooks because it is much more engaging than print.

All of my Italian texts have pronunciation guides, but this software package–which offers sound while books cannot–does not. Instead of beginning with basic words, the software should start where we all start learning our native languages–with the alphabet and phonetics. Hearing the sounds would be more useful than trying to sound them out from textbooks. The next problem with this software is vocabulary. I like this software series because it is much cheaper than other software packages, such as Rosetta Stone. You can purchase other products in the series as you go along (EuroTalk Interactive – World Talk! Italian or EuroTalk Interactive – Vocabulary Builder! Learn Italian), and it’s not as great a financial burden as buying a complete learning set at one time. However, you’re not learning enough vocabulary with these programs alone, and they should be supplemented with other products, such as Mastering Italian Vocabulary: A Thematic Approach (Mastering Vocabulary Series). Finally, while I really enjoy have the iPod clips to listen to while I’m away from my computer, it would be better if the spoken words were presented in both English and Italian. That way, I wouldn’t have to look at my iPod to see what the English word is, and I could listen to the tracks while driving.

Overall, I recommend software or CDs to help with Italian pronunciation and this software will certainly help there. Once you are familiar with general pronunciation, you shouldn’t have a problem figuring out how to pronounce other Italian words. The software is much more interactive than simply reading from a textbook and it allows you to quiz yourself on word retention. It’s not the best way to learn Italian, but the simple fact of the matter is that I turned to this program more often than my textbooks because it is much more engaging than print.

Great Pen Scanner For The Slow & Lazy ! ! !
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I tried this pen because I have to type a lot of homework. I read a few of those comments with 1-2 stars and it seems that this does not work well with Mac, but it works great with Windows ! ! ! ^-^ It's not perfect but it's better than typing. It goes a little messy when it's scanning the curve of the book (like the middle) just a little practice and you'll be good. I also like the buttons it helps a lot because I use a lot of Enters and Tabs. This product is good for people who does not type 50+ wpm, or someone who needs to type a lot of stuff thats off the book.

I Scan, it really types.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Very good product for PC user. Save me a lots of time scanning text, it makes "typing" data entry fun! There is some steps to make scanning perfect

1) flat surface
2) scan at constant speed
3) enough contrast in page

Wasn't Helpful
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
We were moving to Japan and I was looking for computer software to get my kids (age 11 and 8) started with basic words. This got high marks and included other languages so I bought it. We were very disappointed and the kids gave up on it. The problem is that it is difficult to understand the pronounciation of the words. The audio is just not clear.

I later ordered Power Japanese, an adult software program, and we were much happier.

Great Dictionary Overall, Does Drain Batteries...
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
First, I would like to say that I am one of those people who agonizes over purchasing decisions on things like this (an electronic arabic dictionary in this case) because it will inevitably be a lot of money and I'm always afraid that I won't figure out if it sucks until after the refund period has passed. Therefore I decided it was my civic duty to write a review for all of you out there who may be cautious shoppers like myself.

Overall this dictionary is very good. The Arabic-English dictionary allows you to look up words beginning in either English or Arabic and allows for reverse translation once you've found a word (since usually more than one is available) so that you can make sure that the translation is the word you want. For instance say you look up "funny," and you see two words in Arabic come up in response. You can click on one of the Arabic words and hit the reverse translation button and it will pull up the equivalent in English. While this may seem obvious or maybe frivilous for me to mention, some words such as say, "point," may have more than one meaning so it's more useful than one would think. Also, you do not have to look up words by their roots, which makes life so much easier (I'm guessing most of you Arabic students out there know what I mean). Furthermore, the hangman game is pretty amusing and the phrasebook is amazing.

Not only does the phrasebook have hundreds of phrases (more than I've been able to go through), but it also says ALL of them out loud in Arabic. This means that you can listen to it and practice it on your own, or if you're desperate you can just point to the screen to whoever you need to understand your point. The flashcard feature is also pretty sweet beacause you can make your own lists, name them (in English or in Arabic) and add a lot of cards (I think from like 30-50, but I'm not exactly sure cause I've never added that many). Although not all of the words in Arabic can be vocalized, a large percentage of them can be and it's really a)better than nothing and b) very useful because so many of them are. There is also a nifty backlight feature so you can use it regardless of the hour.

There are only two downsides that I can think of: 1) It does drain batteries a little fast, I'd say you'll probably end up needing new batteries about once every month or month and a half 2) The lack of a keyboard interface. Although the stylus is cool and everything, it's not quite as efficient as a keyboard.

I got it directly from the ECTACO website as well and got a really good deal (about $154 on sale) and it also came with a bunch of extra software which I haven't downloaded yet (despite owning it for more than two months, yes, I'm a slacker) but will probably be really cool if this dictionary is any indicator.

I hope that someone finds this helpful and good luck shopping!

Shallow: not for intermediate / advanced users
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Many of the words that I look up in this dictionary are not there which is not something I would expect from an electronic dictionary. Simple words such as 'knuckle' (nudillo) and 'heading' (encabezamiento) were not in the dictionary. I got a message that said: correction... and then it offers me other words that I did not enter. This dictionary offers a poor selection of intermediate to advanced vocabulary. I was tempted to throw it out the window.

Great item
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This item translates many lanbuages. It has overlays that show the other languages next to the keys. It also shows the word on the screen in both languages. This should be great for my squad and I to use in Iraq.

Save your money
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This device seemed like a great idea at the time I bought it, but it really isn't. I didn't find it to be very helpful. The extra software is terrible. The only thing it accomplishes is you looking rediculous with the bulky hardly audible speaker necklace around your neck. Russian people will only laugh at you. I had to stop wearing it because it became such a spectacle. There are fewer phrases by far than a phrase book and it takes forever to do a search. This is the reality of this device; in Russia there is no time to fool with this thing. I used my Rough Guide Phrasebook for all my communication and I used this thing as a currency converter. The currency converter was really the only useful feature. The device was a waste of money and it's expensive. The Rough Guide Phrasebook is a small fraction of the price of this and is far more helpful. The Rough Guide Phrasebook has a Russian glossary section and many times I just handed it to the Russian person for them to look up the English word they wanted to tell me. My advice is to save your money.

Fair deal....
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Helpful in everyday life. But I wouldnt recommend it to people, who need a dictionary for professional translations or students. The screen resolution and pronunciation could be improved there is no pronunciation of Russian words. But at the end of the day I should admit that for that price it is a fair deal. If you want something advanced - you should pay more money ;-)

very glitchy and wonky
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
For this day it is already the third item in a row for us. We had to replace it twice. If it wasn't the seller's policy not to give refund after one week, we would definitely prefer a refund.

The first dictionary could stop working and none of the buttons responded till we would take out the batteries and then put them back in. Usually it happened every day. Than we asked to replace it, and the next unit worked ok for about 2 or 3 weeks. Then it stopped working forever with all our attempts to replace the batteries etc.

Hopefully, the third one would work better, but who knows... The message was clear from the very beginning. I would never buy it one more time, even if for less.

Nice dictionary, bad quality
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
It would be a nice dictionary if not the build quality. The most important thing is that it freezes randomly and sometimes it is hard to make it work again, because pressing the reset button and even removing batteries do not always help. First time it happened several months after we bought it. I was able to reset it by pushing random combinations of buttons. Now, after 2.5 years of use, it is dead with half of the screen black and half white. No reaction to reset, batteries removal or keyboard.

Think twice!

Another disappointed customer
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I'm sorry to say that other reviews of this product from customers who really wanted it to work also apply to my experience. The software loaded on my Mac (OS X 10.4.7), but then the trouble started. The software USB driver could not seem to keep the pen captured, and when it did, scanning was haphazard. Not that it mattered, because try as I might (and believe me, I am a very careful troubleshooter), I could not get a scan that was clear enough or stable enough for IRIS to recognize. This is too bad, because the IRIS engine in general is fast and accurate in other Mac applications ... and is what led me to give this product a try. Thank you as always to Amazon for your customer-friendly return policies!

Finally it works
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
After looking for a decent electronic dictionary for English-Arabic, I found out that I have no choice but trying this one, even though I had bad experience with its English-French language teacher before (I threw it in a trash). The positives on this unit is, it works well as a dictionary, the Arabic translations for an English word is quite complete. However, most of the programs in there like grammar or hangman are meant for Arabic language user attempting to learn English. The user interface is easy to navigate (but reading the manual before clicking around will help). You can either use a pen to write a word like in Palm or use the digital keyboad on the screen. The pronunciation is clearer than expected (when used with headphones) but it's useless through the speaker of the unit which is located in the back (what's the logic behind this???). The unit is sturdy enough and the programs are reliable. The downpoints are that they use up batteries (2 AAA) quickly...Ectaco should have given a choice of rechargable battery and A/C jack but unfortunately it's not part of this unit. Also, some words in arabic cannot be pronounced by dictionary. Other than that, the world clock is not accurate. But I don't see myself using it as an organizer even if the unit has some potential. Why clatter it with junks, if the reason you are buying it for its use as dictionary? I bought this unit from ectaco website itself and got a good deal on sale with free stuff so it's worth checking it out before you decide to buy.

Don't waste your money!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I an American Arabic Linguist using this product to translate. They advertise that it has 670k+ words which I highly doubt. I would say when I put in an arabic word that I don't know, maybe 60% of the time it's there. Or I have to use another form of it to guess the meaning. It's rediculous. Sometimes you'll get a phrase with your target word in it, but it doesn't give the meaning of the word on its own. As for the voice feature for pronunciate of the word, it's absolutely pathetic. The voice is totally computerized and sounds like Stephen Hawkings and is barely understandable unless you know the language well. This is false advertising and would love to return the piece of junk but I can't. As far as the other features go, they're worthless. Vocab, SAT games, the english dictionary (so lacking in words), the stupid time keeper and whatnot, its all a waste.

So-so for the money
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The idea and format aren't bad. I would have liked it if there had been a few more words to learn. Also, instead of learning animal names, which aren't very useful if you don't live on a farm, they should have included some simple sentences. A little more material or a little lower price would have increased my rating to 4 stars.

Excellent Translator
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
easy to use and suits my needs nicely - it would be even better if it spoke in Russian as well as english

Not the best
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The woman that I purchased this for is from Lebanon and she informed me that the dialect of arabic that is used is very old and "formal" so it is quite difficult to use for her.

Sharp EL-6930B organizer
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This a replacement for a previously owned Sharp electronic organizer. It's not as user friendly as the old one, in the YO series, but it is the best I could find. Not looking for a translator (which is good because it is very minimal), just a compact, convenient address book with a hard cover and no stylus to lose.
